FREEDOM READERS, CHRIST COMMUNITY CHURCH, AND THE HOUSING AUTHORITY OF CONWAY OFFER AFTER SCHOOL LITERACY PROGRAM TO DARDEN TERRACE AND HUCKABEE HEIGHTS COMMUNITIES
CONWAY, SC. Freedom Readers in conjunction with the Housing Authority of Conway will begin an afterschool literacy program at the community center in Darden Terrace Apartments Monday January 11, 2010 at 3:00 PM and Wednesday January 13, 2010 at Huckabee Heights Apartments at 3:00 PM.
Freedom Readers is a small group of church and community members who seek to share the joys of reading and writing with youngsters. The group is an outreach of the Love in Action network of Christ Community Church in Conway and is open to anyone sixteen years of age or older.
Freedom Readers will meet weekly with students in grades K-5 to provide snacks, literacy activities, and homework help. Each student will receive a brand new book at each meeting. The program ends April 30, 2010.
The inability to read well is one of the most urgent concerns we face today. The connection between incarceration and reading problems has been well documented, and illiteracy has been linked to a host of other social issues including teen pregnancy, homelessness, and the high school drop out rate. It’s been estimated that more than $2 billion dollars is spent each year on students who repeat a grade because they have reading problems. Freedom Readers exists to address these issues.
The group is seeking monetary donations and brand-new picture books. Volunteers are needed as well, retired educators preferred.
